About Us
Stepwise Investments is a multi-strategy quantitative investment firm that implements a systematic, research-driven, portfolio of strategies. Stepwise is driven by a passion for revealing order in the complexity of financial markets in order to help institutions and accredited investors to achieve their financial goals. Founded in 2018, it reflects Dr. Jonathan Brogaard’s decade-long vision for an investment vehicle that merges emerging insights from academia with real-world application to complex markets.
Objective
Stepwise seeks to capture consistent capital appreciation with lower volatility relative to traditional investment strategies. It deploys statistical arbitrage to realize stable gains.
Approach
We apply a scientific approach to investing. When developing a new investment approach, we look to find innovative investment approaches that can produce high return per unit of risk for the foreseeable future.

Investment Strategy
We are powered by a scientific approach to investing that relies on the latest research into markets and financial technologies. We hypothesize, use data, test, and learn. Highly quantitative investment strategies facilitate deep analysis of market fundamentals and help calibrate successful sophisticated linear and non-linear analysis. An emphasis on research, technology and automation also helps us to be nimble to respond to mispricing, volatility and anomalous trading environments. Cross-market trading enables analysis across multiple asset classes to assess conditions, deploy statistical arbitrage and facilitate efficient hedging of risk.
Investment Process
We review hundreds of academic and practitioner papers a year looking for novel insights into the return generation process, unconstrained by asset class or investment horizon.
When a possible signal detection is found, we apply a systematic battery of tests to the idea, which ultimately ends in a series of backtesting, sensitivity, and robustness experiments. We test over decades, while paying close attention to modern markets.
Strategies that survive are coded up and traded in a paper account to gauge stability, capacity, and implementation costs.
If there is continued promise of the idea, a small live pilot of the strategy is conducted. This allows us to iterate the idea to make sure the strategy is optimized for the realities of live markets.
Once we have confidence that the strategy works as expected in real market conditions, we add it to the portfolio of strategies used by Stepwise.
We apply real time monitoring to the components and to the entirety of the portfolio to ensure the system performs as expected.
We overlay the strategies with a unifying portfolio optimization methodology that further reduces the overall portfolio risk.
